50th Anniversary Award

Doug G4BEQ Vice Chairman..

A special award to commemorate our golden anniversary has now been designed and approved by the committee.

To qualify for this award you must have worked, or heard, 50 RNARS members between the period 1st January and 31st December 2010.  Mixed modes are acceptable but a station can only be counted once no matter on how many bands/modes you have worked/heard it. Each station worked/heard counts one point but special stations run by the RNARS during the qualifying period will count two points.

Applications for this award must be on the official RNARS awards form which can be downloaded below, or by sending a suitable sae to the Awards Manager. QSL cards are not required.

The RNARS was formed in June 1960. Next year, therefore, is the 50th anniversary and a number of events are being planned throughout the year to celebrate this occasion. These include activities at HMS Collingwood, the home of the Society's headquarters station, to which members of both the local and amateur radio communities will be invited.

The RNARS has been approved to use the callsign GB50RNARS as it is a milestone in the history of the Society. It appears that this or any other allocated callsign may be used by UK members only of the Society from their own stations for a period not exceeding 28 days in order for contacts to be available to the maximum number of Amateur Radio operators throughout the UK and beyond.

If any member wishes to use the allocated callsign from his or her home QTH for a set period, not exceeding 28 days during 2010, will you please inform me as soon as possible of the dates between which you will be able to operate the callsign together with your full name, your main station address and postcode at which your amateur radio license is authorised to operate, and a contact telephone number. These will be included in a schedule which will be attached to the application for the license, therefore, time is of the essence and if you are contemplating running the station to celebrate this occasion, then the information is needed immediately.

PLEASE NOTE that it is a condition of the Notice of Variation that any special event call of this nature MUST have access to the general public at the location from which it is used.

The following will be reserved dates:-

January 2010 - Glynn GW4MVA
February 2010 - Dave G1OCN / Phil G1LKJ

Having disbanded the 50th Anniversary Sub Committee for the reasons already stated, I am still receiving requests from the few really dedicated members who are disappointed that we are not having some form of celebratory dinner/get together.

Mindful of these concerns, which I share, I have now approached the authorities at HMS Collingwood for permission to hold a dinner in the establishment.

This has been granted and a date of the 26th June 2010 allocated with the venue being the Warrant Officers and Senior Rates Mess, which I have accepted. However, until I have some idea of numbers who are keen to attend I am unable to obtain the cost of such a dinner but would assume it will be around the £30 - £35 mark.
 * A dinner has been arranged at HMS Collingwood and I will be taking bookings in the New Year when menu and prices have been confirmed.

We will also have to comply with the mess rules during the event, the main one being dress. For this event smart casual will be required. That is tailored trousers - not jeans, shirt - not T-shirt or similar, shoes - not trainers, jacket optional but smart jacket/blazer if worn. Those are the minimum requirements.

Accommodation could prove difficult as the establishment is experiencing a high demand to accommodate service personnel but if accommodation does become available I will be informed two weeks before the event takes place. If things go our way and we do get an allocation I shall reserve those places for those that have to travel the longest distance.
Accommodation for this event may not be possible due to the high demand of service personal. If it can be arranged will be informed not earlier than 2 weeks before the event. It is up to you to check with the mess if you want accommodation.

Surprisingly it is our overseas members who are most keen to see this event take place which rather puts our residents members in bad light.

I would also like to inform all those members that showed an interest in the original idea I put forward to have a weekend get together at Coventry that due to the great interest showed by some of our overseas members I intend to approach the hotel again and see if I can re-arrange things with them. Normally they work on a minimum of 50 people but I want to negotiate for a smaller number. If I can twist their arm we will be looking for this event to take place August / September 2010. I hope to be able to amplify on this in the next few weeks so keep an eye on the RNARS news.
 * Get together week-end at Coventry on the 6th to 8th August is well in hand and most of the allocated rooms have already been taken. If you are considering going to this event I would suggest that you pay your £10 reserve fee soonest otherwise you could be disappointed.
